Later that evening, a blizzard blew across the icy hills.  Manfred, Sid, Diego, the FT Squad and WaveRiders were again on the walk, but they couldn’t stand the severe cold or wind.  “Guys, we gotta get this kid outta the wind,” said Manfred as Roshan huddled on Manfred’s back for warmth.

The group agreed, seeing that the night was getting harsh.  Up ahead they saw a rocky area and thought it would be a nice place to recover and take shelter.  “Diego, how much further,” asked Kyle.

“Three miles,” replied Diego.

“I’m beat,” said Manfred while Sid picked up some pieces of chalk outside.

“We can’t continue our journey in this blizzard,” said Wubbzy, “I can barely see a thing.”

“Neither can I,” said Cassidy, “what do we do?”

“Don’t worry,” said Manfred as everyone huddled in the shelter, “we’ll get there in the morning.”

Using his pieces of chalk, Sid started making a drawing on the nearby wall.  Everyone noticed him as Diego asked, “what’re you doing?”

“I’m putting sloths on the map,” said Sid.

The drawing Sid made was one of a sloth.  It was like a stick figure man.  “Wow,” said Kyle, “you’ve got a talent for drawing.”

“Hey, why don’t you make it realistic and draw him lying down,” suggested Manfred.

“And make him rounder,” said Diego.

Manfred took the chalk out of Sid’s hand and drew a round belly around the sloth drawing.  “Perfect,” said Diego.

“Ah-ha.  I forgot how to laugh,” said Sid sarcastically as he took the chalk and tried scribbling the drawing out.

As Sid rubbed it against the wall, some small sparks came out and landed on a small pile of sticks.  Everyone stood completely astounded by what happened.  Sid, seeing that he had finally made a fire successfully, looked at his chalk.  “I’m a genius,” he said as he kissed it.

Later in the evening, a small fire was set and everyone camped out around it, passing the blizzard.  “From now on, you’ll have to refer to me as, Sid: Lord of the Flame,” said Sid as he posed near the fire.

“Hey Lord of the Flame…your tail’s on fire,” said Manfred.

Sid, feeling his tail getting hot, looked and saw the small flame on his tail.  Panicking, Sid ran around the area with his tail aflame.  But as he screamed, Diego grabbed Sid and pulled him to the ice, where the fire fizzled out.  “Oh…thank you,” said Sid, relieved, “from now on, I’m gonna call you Diego…”

“Lord of ‘touch me and you’re dead,’” said Diego.

Sid gasped upon hearing this, but Diego quickly changed his threatening tone into a joking one as he pulled Sid closer to him and started roughhousing him like a big brother.  “I’m just kiddin’ you little knucklehead,” said Diego.

The squad laughed at this activity, finding it very amusing.  “Oh Diego,” said Thomas, enjoying the moment.

“Hey Lovebirds,” said Manfred, getting everyone’s attention, “look at this.”

Everyone looked and saw something incredible happening.  They saw Roshan taking his first steps, without crawling or falling.  This was fascinating to watch.  Sid was just as happy as the squad and WaveRiders to see the little baby walk for the first time.  “I don’t believe it,” said Sid.

Sid looked at Diego, who was impressed with the baby’s walking.  “Isn’t he just so precious,” said Karri.

“Such an amazing moment to see ‘em take his first steps into growing up,” said Donkey.

Roshan started walking towards Sid.  Sid smiled at the baby and persuaded him to come to him.  “Come here you little biped,” said Sid, “come here you little wormy-worm.  Come to Uncle Sid.”

But Roshan started walking a different direction, away from Sid.  “No, no, no, no, no, no, this way,” said Sid, “this way.”

Sid saw that Roshan was waddling towards Diego.  Rudy’s happiness for Roshan walking turned into uncertainty upon seeing him approach the saber.  “Go to him,” said Diego, who pointed towards Manfred, “go to him.”

But Roshan kept coming towards Diego.  He slipped and grabbed onto Diego’s leg, hugging it.  Diego looked nervously at the baby, not expecting Roshan to be attached to him.  “Aw, he likes you Diego,” said Lilly.

“Ok,” he said nervously as he looked at the baby.

Roshan squealed at Diego.  “Good job…keep…practicing,” said Diego nervously as he guided Roshan towards Manfred.

Roshan started walking towards Manfred while Rudy looked at Diego.  He started having a feeling that Diego was starting to have thoughts.  “Look at that,” said Sid, “our little guy is growing up.”

“His daddy will love this,” said Martinez.

Roshan slipped onto his bottom and rubbed his eyes.  Manfred could see that the baby was getting sleepy.  “Alright, come on,” he said as he picked up the baby, “sleep time, lumpy.”

“Yeah, we should get some sleep,” said Kyle, “tomorrow’s the day we reunite the baby with his family.”

“I’d say we’ve done a great job, eh guys,” said Dennis.

“Amen on that buddy,” said Kaytlin, “we’ve braved the ice age.”

Manfred settled himself in for the night, along with the squad and WaveRiders.  While Manfred settled in for the evening, Sid sat next to Diego.  “Look at that big pushover,” he said, “you know Diego, I’ve never had a friend who would risk his life for me.”

Reminded of what happened at the lava chasm, Diego said, “yeah.  Manny’s…he’s a good guy.”

“Yeah he is,” said Sid before getting tired himself, “well…goodnight.”

Sid settled in for the night, leaving Diego to himself.  But as he started dozing himself, he noticed Rudy awake, and looking at him.  But Rudy wasn’t acting suspicious like before.  Instead, he was proud about what they had done over the course of the mission.  “Quite the adventure we’ve had, huh Diego,” he said.

Diego, nervous about talking with Rudy, said, “well…yeah.  We’ve come a long way.”

“Oh, and I’ve got something to say,” said Rudy, “I’m sorry about how I’ve acted towards you.”

“What do you mean,” asked Diego.

“I’m talking about how I’ve been suspicious of you since we started our walk to Glacier Pass,” said Rudy, “it was…unpleasant of me to do that, especially since I’ve done it before.”

“Before,” asked Diego.

“Yeah, with the WaveRiders,” said Rudy, “at one time I thought they were willing to associate themselves with a crafty and murderous lizard.  When reuniting with them after a long time of never seeing them, I assumed that they were still what I thought they were…but then I realized they weren’t and I’ve grown to accept them…like with you.”

Diego looked at Rudy, surprised that Rudy was no longer acting rough towards him.  “Wow…I…I can’t believe you’re doing this,” said Diego, obliged by him acting this way.

“I’m not made of stone Diego,” said Rudy, “I value friendships with people who I travel with, like my friends.  I’m starting to see you as a friend too.”

This comment shocked Diego.  “Friend,” he asked.

“That’s right,” said Rudy, “I’m sure the others agree.”

“Um…yeah…but maybe we should talk about it later,” said Diego nervously, “we’ve got a big day tomorrow.”

“Yeah, you’re right.  See you in the morning,” said Rudy, “…and thanks for helping us get this far.”

Rudy started dozing off, leaving Diego to himself.  Diego smiled at the gator, happy to see him accept him as a friend.  But as he looked out towards the blizzard, he saw a bit of Half Peak.  That was where his pack was residing until the time was right to attack.  Diego felt a lot of doubt about whether to carry out the pack’s plan, or do something else.  But being too tired to think about it now, Diego settled in and fell asleep.

With everyone asleep, Scrat appeared from behind a rock and quietly tip-toed his way towards the fire.  He looked at Manfred, hoping not to wake him, before turning to the fire.  Using a stick attached to his frozen acorn, he lifted it above the fire, hoping that it would thaw out the acorn.  He lifted it just above the flames, eagerly wanting the acorn to get thawed out.  Finally, all the ice melted and the acorn was free, but as suddenly as it thawed out, it popped and hit Scrat in the head.  The acorn was now a piece of popcorn.

The following morning, the group was back on the road again.  There was another snow storm, but it wasn’t as intense as last night’s blizzard.  “Alright, let’s get you all cleaned up,” said Sid, “I mean, what’s your daddy gonna say if you go back all smushy and sticky like this?”

Sid licked Roshan around his face, trying to clean him in preparation of returning to his family.  “Let me just clean that up.  That looks good.  A little bit here,” he said.

“You clean up nice little fella,” said Manfred as he stuck his trunk out, thinking Roshan was ok the way he was.

“You know, I think he’s starting to look like me,” said Sid, “hey Diego, what do you think?”

Diego looked around Half Peak and felt uncertain.  “Maybe we shouldn’t do this,” he said.

“Huh,” asked a confused Daizy, “why not?”

“Because if we save him, he’ll grow up to be a hunter,” said Diego, “and who do you think he’ll hunt?”

“Maybe because we saved him, he won’t hunt us,” said Sid as Roshan tugged on his hair.

“Yeah and maybe he’ll grow fur and a long skinny neck and call you Momma,” said Diego, irritated.

Everyone looked at the saber, surprised by his attitude.  “What’s your problem,” asked Manfred.

After a moment of silence, Diego said, “nothing.  Let’s go.  I’m freezing my tail off.”

“Yeah, maybe it’s the cold,” said Cassidy, “brr.  At least we’ll go somewhere warm when we’re done.”

“In that case, let’s keep going,” said Thomas, “we don’t wanna miss the humans before they get through the pass.”

The group carried on through the falling snow.  What they didn’t know though was that they were being watched.  Lenny watched the group travel further down the path, past the black, snow-covered rocks.  Diego, sensing that his pack was nearby, stopped walking and watched the others go on.  Seeing them made Diego very doubtful about carrying out his mission.  Being with these guys made Diego feel a whole lot different then from what he had been while with the pack.  These guys were more than just travelling comrades on the same mission as Diego.  Instead, throughout the journey, they had proven to be friendlier than his pack-mates.  They watched over each other throughout the mission and made Diego feel more comfortable.  But as Diego looked up, he saw Oscar observing the group from above.  This made Diego realize that he might as well be leading the only people he had considered friends into a death trap.  “Hey Diego,” called Manfred, “you frozen back there.”

“Just a little further, and we’ll be done,” said Rudy.

Seeing that Manfred, the mammoth who saved him from the lava chasm, and Rudy, the gator who just started accepting him, were both walking into an ambush set specifically for them, Diego realized what he had to do, though it would cost him their trust.  He rushed towards the group and exclaimed, “GET DOWN!”

This confused everyone.  “Huh,” asked Sid.

“What,” asked Manfred.

“Shh,” shushed Diego, “get down and follow me.”

“Diego, what’s wrong,” asked Thomas.

“At the bottom of Half Peak,” said Diego before hesitating for a moment then cutting to the chase, “…there’s an ambush…waiting for you.”

“WHAT,” asked Sid, shocked.

“An ambush,” asked Widget.

“What do you mean ‘ambush,’” asked Manfred.

But Rudy, hearing this and seeing that something was definitely up, turned to Diego.  “Wait…are you saying…”

“I was wrong,” said Diego, “I’m not a lone ranger like I said.  And that was my pack…attacking the humans.”

Rudy gasped upon hearing this.  “Then that means…Rudy was right,” said Lilly who started getting angry, “you were using us.”

“You set us up,” added Karri.

“It was my job,” said Diego, trying to explain myself, “I was supposed to get the baby, but then…”

“YOU BROUGHT US HOME FOR DINNER,” shouted an angry Manfred.

“That’s it,” said Sid, who was equally unhappy, “you’re outta the herd.”

“I’m sorry,” said Diego.

“No you’re not,” said Manfred who swiftly pinned Diego to the wall with his tusk, “not yet.”

“You dirty saber,” said Dennis, “you planned this all along.  Why I oughta…”

“You really did have some bad planned in mind.  Just as we suspected,” said Kyle.

This comment shocked Diego and Rudy.  “What?  You too thought I was up to something,” asked Diego, “why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because we had bigger concerns on our minds,” said Kyle, “we had to get the baby back to the humans, so we couldn’t waste time doing something that would make the mission more harder.”

“But now that we know everything, dealing with you is now our top priority,” said Martinez, “you oughta be ashamed and frostbitten man.”

Rudy stood completely shocked what Kyle said.  He too was suspicious of Diego, but he didn’t openly express his chagrin of having Diego along at all.  “Listen, I can help you,” begged Diego.

“Stay close Sid,” said Manfred, “we can fight our way out.”

“You can’t.  The pack’s too strong,” said Diego, “you have to trust me.”

“TRUST YOU?  WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD WE TRUST YOU,” demanded Manfred.

“You chased the baby’s mother over a waterfall, you bring us into an ambush you planned since we knew you, and you made Rudy look bad in front of us,” said Thomas who was very angry, “why should you be of any use to us anymore?”

“Because I’m your only chance,” said Diego.

Everyone looked at Diego, still upset with him, but unsure whether to trust him or not.  “What now,” asked Donkey who was nervous of the incoming ambush.

Rudy looked at Diego, shocked that he truly was a saber on a mission to get the baby and lead him and his friends into an ambush.  But upon hearing that he was trying to protect them and seeing that he admitted his mistake, he didn’t know what to do.  He looked at Kyle, who was about to make a decision.  Rudy stopped Kyle from saying anything by grabbing his arm.  “I know what we have to do,” he said as he glared at Diego.
This is part 8 of "The FT Squad's Adventures in the Ice Age."

After braving so many obstacles on their mission to return the baby to his family, the group reaches the final stretch of the journey, but now Diego must choose between going out with his plan, or doing something else.

And Sid proclaims himself "Lord of the Flame" after making a fire.

Wow... Rudy still trusts Diego.

Also, it's a marvel how the Ice Age hasn't slowed him or Dennis or any of the WaveRiders down, what with them being cold-blooded and all.
